BSNC congratulates shareholders Colleen Anagick, Marlene Haugen and Barret Eningowuk on receiving the Alaska Federation of Natives (AFN) President’s Awards. Eningowuk and Haugen were nominated by BSNC and Anagick was nominated by the CIRI Foundation. All three were recognized at the 2024 AFN Convention.

Colleen Anagick was honored with the Health Award. Anagick has a strong desire to help others, contributing immensely to the health and wellbeing of families, communities and culture. She has been an invaluable team member in Alaska Native-designed health and wellness programs for nearly 30 years. Currently, Anagick uses her innate gifts and talents as a Tribal Doctor in Traditional Healing. She’s been involved in various community well-being activities such as suicide prevention programs, a women’s talking circle, berry picking and youth sports. Anagick is also an instructor and co-owner of Soul Sisters Basketree.

Marlene Haugen was honored with the Eileen Panigeo MacLean Education Award in recognition of her remarkable 51 years of dedication to education. Haugen began her career as a substitute teacher in Unalakleet, Alaska, in 1973 and became a full-time Paraprofessional in 1974. She dedicated 47 years to the Bering Strait School District and spent four years with the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Haugen retired in May 2024 after an impactful career that included teaching three generations in some families. She was highly involved in school activities and was an active member of the Anchorage Association for the Education of Young Children, further demonstrating her commitment to the education and well-being of our youth.

Barret Eningowuk was honored with the Glenn Godfrey Law Enforcement Award, which recognizes an Alaska Native law enforcement officer who has shown outstanding dedication to the safety of the public in Alaska, often requiring heroic courage in the face of danger. Eningowuk has served as the Village Public Safety Officer (VPSO) in Shishmaref, Alaska, for the past 13 years. In addition to his work as a VPSO, Eningowuk has also been an instructor for Taser, Inc. and DARE for much of his career, further contributing to the safety and well-being of his community.
